Family Drama and Weddings

What would wedding planning be without a little family drama? Think of it as a chance for you and your fiance to practice dealing with these situations as a team. No matter how amazing everyone is, there are always going to be differences of opinion -- now and long after you are married. So, what's the best way to deal with the drama?

First, don't let there be drama where you can help it. Not every issue is the end of the world. Granted, some issues are really important. Thus, learn to pick your battles.

Second, remember what your wedding day is about -- you and your fiance committing to love one another from this day forward. Remind everyone involved of this. It's a time for people to come together to celebrate your love.

Third, be upfront. If family members are contributing financially, be clear about expectations and who controls what. The person giving the money has the right to have an opinion on how the money is spent. You, as the person being offered the money, have the right to politely decline if there are stings attached.

Every client I've worked with has some sort of sticky family issue at one point or another, and I'm always happy to step in as an unbiassed third party when appropriate. (My mom actually tells me I should market myself as the 'Switzerland' of wedding planning.) Just keep what is important at the center of your planning, and hold on tight. At the end of it all, you will be married and that is the point. If you can't weather the storm together (don't worry, it's okay if you need a life preserver now and again), then you may want to stop and seriously think about why you are getting married.

Paying for a Wedding

I entered into this business partially because it pained me to see couples fret over money when planning a wedding. You've heard me say it before, the absolute first thing you should do when planning your wedding is map out your budget (with realistic numbers, not just guesses of what you want to spend on each category). That being said, here are some general tips for figuring out both who pays for what and how much total you have to spend:

*It really is a grab bag when it comes down to who pays for the wedding. It may be the couple, the bride's parents, the groom's parents, or other close family members contributing to the budget. As many couples today wait until they are established in their careers before getting married, they are chipping in more and more. Also, with the economy being the way it is, I tend to see more and more 'group' contributions where each involved party contributes what they can. The days of set percentages or 'traditional' contributions are quickly becoming a thing of the past.

*Have an open and honest conversation with both families before planning anything. Know how much each person is willing to contribute financially and when. Be up front about the fact that you, the couple, will have to decide the final guest list and that budgetary constraints may limit who can be invited. If the groom's side of the guest list is 3x more people than the bride's but the budget doesn't have any room to budge, then you will have to stick to family and your closest of friends. Be realistic, and be clear with everyone from the start that while you would like to include as many people as possible, you may need to make it a more intimate affair. Being honest and upfront will save you many headaches down the road.

Are you wondering how much you should save for your wedding? Money shouldn't be the determining factor as to when you get married. Truly, all you need is enough for a marriage license. A wedding is about a lifetime commitment and not about a single day. Keep that focus in mind and it will take you a long way. I've seen beautiful weddings for under $10k. I've also seen so, so weddings where the couple has spent more than 3x that amount.

A wedding should never put you in debt or add to your debt. If you can't make your credit card payments in full each month or are not meeting other debt obligations, then you shouldn't be shelling out a bunch of money for your wedding. When it comes to things like saving for your first home, it is really a case by case basis depending on what your goals are and what stage of life you are in.

Some of this advice might be hard to swallow. Just remember, your wedding will last one day. Your marraige is a lifetime investment.

Google and Weddings

If you haven't heard yet, Google Docs launched a wide range of tools to help brides and grooms plan their wedding. Considering I worked for Google before launching my own business, I was excited to check out each of the templates. There are over 20 to choose from. I think you will find some more useful than others. Below, I've highlighted a few that will save you time as well as a few that are great but should be used with caution:

Time Savers:

*Address Book: Often a bride sits down to address her invites only to realize that her address book is outdated. Google has created a form that you can send to your guests via email, and it will update your address book automatically. This tool can be a great start in getting your guests' information up-to-date. However, don't forget about your great aunt who may not use email or about those guests whose emails aren't current in your contacts list.

*Seating Chart: Sure, you can make a template yourself. However, Google has already coded one for you. The seating chart tends to change by the minute, right up to the reception. Using this tool will save you from the headache that can be created by constant changes in guest count.

*Choosing a Venue: After creating a budget, choosing a venue can be one of the most overwhelming tasks. Living in Southern California, there are so many great reception and ceremony sites available. Each one has something unique to offer, and each one spells out their costs differently. One might charge a rental fee, while another might incorporate rental costs into a 'per-person' fee. Laying all the information out in one place will help you see the bigger picture when making your final selection.

Things to Consider:

*Budget: Creating a budget is the absolute first thing you should do when planning your wedding. Doing so will save you time and money. However, with any template or form you use for planning, you need to remember that they are not one-size-fits-all. You must modify according to your needs. When you add estimated costs to your budget, don't just guess or use percentages. Instead, call around and get a feel for what your dollar can get you. I've had brides come to me and say that a template told them they would use x% of their budget on flowers. While a percent is a great place to start, it's often not realistic. Make sure the numbers you are using are realistic. $200 is not going to get you 5 bouquets and 5 boutonnieres, not to mention any other florals you might be interested in.

*Wedding Day Schedule: Again, modify to fit your needs and be realistic. This is one area I cannot emphasise the need for the expertise of a planner enough. Chances are, you've never planned a wedding before. It's really hard to guess how long makeup will take, or how long it will take your photographer to capture all your desired family photos. Having a schedule for the day is a must, but it is worthless if the allotted times aren't accurate.

Having An Open Mind

It seems like almost every bride these days is asking me how to save money. While it's important to keep quality at the forefront, having an open mind can save you a lot of money. When you go to a vendor, be prepared for them to inspire you. Tell them what you like, but if you are looking to cut costs let them suggest creative ways to develop your theme. For example, if you go to the florist only wanting lilies but you also want them to give you an amazing deal, don't hold your breath. Their hands are tied when it comes to price. But, if you go in desiring an elegant, white bouquet you may just be surprised what they can come up with for you.

Keep this philosophy in mind when talking to your baker, caterer, bar tenders and more. And especially, don't be afraid to share your visions with your wedding planner and let her come up with ways to implement your inspirations for less. For me, this is one of my favorite aspects of planning!

10 Wedding Resolutions for 2010 Brides

1. Pick appetizers, main dishes, and cake that you love to eat. If you die for the taste chances are your guests will too.

2. Consider a seated dinner over a buffet. When you lay out the costs it is often more affordable and has a very classy flair.

3. Don't charge guests for drinks, but do feel free to pick just a few wines or beers. Or, go with a signature cocktail instead.

4. Know your budget and guest list before planning anything else.

5. Mix up your florals. Use a variety of stems all in the same color, or let the season guide you to what's freshest at the time.

6. Take time off from planning just to go on dates. Dating each other is how you started out; don't forget this important element.

7. Delegate, delegate, delegate. Do not assign yourself any tasks on your wedding day except getting married.

8. Take as many pictures as possible before the ceremony. Seeing your groom in a private moment can be amazing. When you are walking down the aisle, it's hard to take it all in.

9. Personalize your day. Don't follow tradition just for the sake of it.

10. Take time to take in your wedding day. Grab a glass of champagne and a private moment with your new husband after you've walked arm and arm up the aisle.

In the blink of an eye Christmas is over. That means, everything Christmas is on sale. If you are a bride, now is the time to go out and stock up on ribbon and all things on sale. If your wedding colors include white, red, silver, green, blue, or gold you are sure to find some great items to use for decor. Go with an open eye and look for containers, fillers, and papers that you can utilize in your wedding arsenal without it looking like it came from Christmas. And hurry, because of their incredible prices everything will be gone from the shelves in the blink of an eye. Who knows, you might even find things for a fun DIY project that you can complete over the break! I suggest trying Pier 1, Target, Pottery Barn, Crate and Barrel, Anthropology, Michael's, and JoAnn Fabrics. But, don't forget to hit up clothing stores as well. Do you need shawls for your bridesmaids or guests? Now is the time to pick them up!

Selecting Stylish Bridesmaid Dresses

Today I'm going to get up on my soapbox and talk to you about bridesmaid dresses. Many a bride will tell her bridal party that she is going to select something that they will love, look great in, and want to wear again. If you as the bride are picking the dress, then it probably won't be something your bridal party will truly love, think they look great in, or want to wear again. Sorry, but everyone has their own taste. By no means does this mean the dresses you pick are bad. However, if you really do want your bridal party to love their dresses, feel great in them, and wear them again then you must let them do the picking.

You do not have to give your bridesmaids free reign. On the contrary, you don't want them looking like some cacophony of color and style. But, they also don't have to look like quadruplets (or twins... based on how many you are having in your bridal party). Pick a color scheme and a basic style. Go shopping with them. But let them pick the cut or shade that will best suit them.

Don't want to be bridezilla? Remember that your bridal party loves. However, this doesn't mean you have to make them wear matching, off the factory floor, dresses.

Note: Take this advice with a grain of salt. I too am guilty as charged. And yes, there are dress lines that you select that may look great. I'm just saying, letting your girls pick will make them the happiest of campers. Besides, you and the grooms are the ones everyone is looking at during the ceremony!

I joined Twitter awhile back, but I realized today that I never posted it here. (The new blog will have a link. Yay!) It was against my better judgement, and I have made a vow never to tweet things like 'Time for a bathroom break!' However, I cannot think of a better way to stay up-to-date with what's going on in the wedding industry. If you are a bride, Twitter is a great way to hear about new venues, great deals, and be inspired with great ideas. Taking a Step Back

No, don't worry. I am not stepping back from wedding and event planning. Actually, we've got lots of new and exciting things going on that you will be hearing about over the next several months. However, I do find that I do my best work and planning when I take time now and again to step back, breathe, and take a day to gain perspective. It's in these times that some of my best ideas come to me.

Brides and grooms, remember to apply this strategy in planning your wedding. It's so easy to get caught up in phone calls to florists, emails to the caterer, shopping only for wedding stuff... Make sure you take a day every now and again where you don't do a single wedding-related task. It's important for you and the sanity of those around you.

All I want for every bride and groom in their planning is to have a day that they and those around them enjoy. One where they can sit back and take in the full meaning of the day. If you don't do this from the start of planning, trust me, it will be difficult to do on your big day!

Getting the Most Out of Your Bridesmaid Bouquets, Centerpieces, and Floral Arrangements

When it comes time to figuring out florals for your wedding, don't forget that you can use your bridesmaids' bouquets and other flowers from the ceremony to decorate your reception. You can decorate the cake table, bar, or any other area that needs a little color.

To take it even further, consider using your reception centerpieces to decorate the ceremony. Maybe you would like to line the aisle with them or create a large display around the alter. If you're concerned about transport, know that it is often cheaper to have your florist handle it as compared to the costs of ordering more flowers.

Five Cheers for Fall Weddings

Fall is my favorite season for a lot of reasons: life seems to slow down, the air becomes crisp, the weather is beautiful, I can mix and match wardrobes, candy shows up in every corner of every store, and I get to pull out the pumpkin spice candles. When it comes to weddings, I'm declaring myself the new 'fall wedding' advocate. Consider these five cheers for fall weddings:

The weather is beautiful, especially in Southern California. You don't have to risk it being a scorcher, and rain isn't likely early on. P.S. While I can't control the weather, I have yet to have it rain during a wedding.

You will have a better chance of booking the quality vendors you want. Without a doubt, the vendors you book will have a huge impact on the outcome of your day. While there are still quite a few fall weddings, it's definitely not as busy as the summer.

Your guests will thank you because they will be less likely to have conflicting vacation plans, be invited to another wedding, or be in the middle of experiancing wedding overload.

Fall offers lots of natural elements that are cheep and easy to incorporate into your design. Think trees, leaves...

You will have all of the summer to finish planning your wedding and wrap up the details. A well planned bride experiances much less stress during the final countdown.

When To Rehearse?

A wedding rehearsal is a must. You will have so much on your mind come the day of your wedding, it's important to make sure everyone knows what to do ahead of time. Truly, it shouldn't take more than an hour and that hour will have saved you from a huge snafu come the wedding day. Really, I'm not interested in ranting on about this one. Just take my word for it, you absolutely need to rehearse your ceremony with all parties in attendance.

Traditionally, rehearsals were always the night before the wedding. However, as of late more and more are having them two days in advance. There are pros and cons to each, so just make sure you take them all into consideration before picking the rehearsal date. Here are 3 important things to consider when choosing your rehearsal date:

Some vendors (officiant, consultant, venue) will refuse to have a Friday rehearsal, so make sure to check with them ahead of time. Their Friday may be booked with another wedding.
Rehearsing two days ahead gets it out of the way. This may give you more time to relax, but for some the longer wait until the wedding might cause anxiety. You know yourself well enough to decide which category you fall into.
If you have your rehearsal two days in advance, your out of town participants might have to take extra time off of work and pay for an extra night of hotel. It takes a lot financially and physically to be a part of a wedding, so remember to be considerate of situations whenever possible.

To-Be-Weds: Meghan & Blake

When I met with Meghan for the first time, she told me the one vendor they had already booked was Ashley Rose. I was excited, because I've been stalking Ashley's work and really thought 'I'd love to get to do a wedding with her soon.' Thus, I'm thrilled to share some of Meghan and Blake's e-pics. Of course, they were all shot by the fabulous Ashley Rose. Meghan and Blake met in high school and fell in love later on. They are both big fans of loving life and having a good time, and we will be incorporating that ideal throughout their ceremony and reception.

Their puggle is just too cute. By the way, have I mentioned how much I love 'kissing' engagement pictures. Truly, it captures the essence of what we will all be celebrating on their wedding day - their love!

Dollar Stores Can Equal Wedding Deals Without Sacrificing Taste

Let me be clear, a dollar store is not the place to buy most of your wedding supplies and decor. Some things you shouldn't buy for your wedding - no matter how tempting that $1 price is -include fake flowers, self-stick, giant, white bows, and tealights. The first two are self explanatory. I say 'no' to tealights from a dollar store because burn time is important. You don't want your candles to burn out long before the party is over.

Now that you have been properly warned, here are some great steals for every bride...

Love these garden hooks for ganging lanterns.

Flip flops for your guests on the dance floor really show you care.

There are always lots of signs to be made (menus, instructions, storyboards...). These little easels are a great way to display them.

If you're having a toss garter, might as well throw one that didn't cost an arm and a leg.

White tissue paper is great as an unseen filler in the bottom of baskets and other containers.

I encourage you to walk the whole store and see what you find to fit your needs. Just say no to tacky. Also, keep in mind that some things they sell are cheaper elsewhere. For example, I saw small bags of river rocks during my shopping trip. However, if you need a lot to fill a bunch of vases, buying them in bulk would be cheaper.

Wedding After Parties --A Few Facts

Last week, a bridesmaid-to-be asked me about after parties, because she was considering hosting one in honor of the bride and groom. Awe, what a sweet bridesmaid! As these continue to be a growing trend, here are a few fast facts for you:

After parties are just that, parties that take place after the reception is over. Often, time restraints and noise restrictions mean the wedding reception cannot go on indefinitely. But, that doesn't mean the celebration has to end.

An after party can be informal (no invitations necessary) and tends to include the 'younger' crowd of close college friends / the wedding party / anyone who might what to stay out and celebrate.

You can book a room at a local club or hotel, or it can be as casual as just showing up at a bar. Word of warning if you aren't going to make a reservation, check in advance to make sure they will have room for everyone / that there isn't another party scheduled at that location.

It's a great time to kick back and catch up with old friends and people from out of town. Any past bride will tell you, the reception goes very quickly --too quickly to get to chit chat with everyone at length.

People can change out of their more formal attire, or everyone can head straight from the wedding. I say, you really never get a chance to wear that dress again so just wear it. Plus, it's fun to be out on the town as bride and groom. You never know who will offer you a congratulatory freebie.

Pretty much anything goes, but be clear about who is paying. Sometimes each guest is responsible for their own drinks and sometimes the bride or groom's parents might arrange to pick up the tab. Just be sure everyone knows what is going on in advance, because somebody has to pay the bill at the end of the night.

As I've been working on new things the thought that keeps popping up in my mind is that I never want perspective to be lost when it comes to what brides and grooms take from my site and what I put forth in my work...

Your wedding day is an amazing and important event. There is great seriousness and significance in committing to spend the rest of your life with the person you love in a way you will never love any other. Because of this significance, weddings tend to be the biggest party one will ever throw. Thus, in planning this huge celebration it is easy to get caught up in the little things and lose perspective. So today I strive and ask every bride, groom, family member, and member of the industry to remember to take moments to step back from it all and remember what is most important about a wedding day.

Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth!

Recently the hubbs and I stopped in to check out Sweet and Saucy Shop's opening day. Melody, owner and baker extraordinaire, was kind enough to plan it around my grandfather's 85th birthday --hehe. Thus, we just had to pick up one of everything to take down to San Diego. Now, my plan was to take a picture of the beautiful treats that I had purchased. However, it was all so delicious that I ate a good chunk of them during our drive. My family soon devoured what was left. If you know my family, we are all into dessert, and everyone loved every last bite.

Have no fear, because Melody was kind enough to send me a few pics to share with everyone. The pictures aren't enough, because you've got to taste these treats. They are having their Grand Opening Celebration this Sunday and giving away mini desserts with each purchase while supplies last. No matter what you're doing on Sunday, I suggest dropping in and treating yourself to a little piece of heaven. The shop is located in Long Beach, at 6400 Stearns Street, just off the 405.
The display case is one of a kind, as are the creations. Now I'm not just blogging this because I like dessert. Melody creates exquisite mini dessert displays and gorgeous cakes of all kinds for weddings and events. Go check out the My Sweet and Saucy Blog, but I'm warning you now that you will spend hours scrolling through the posts and drooling.

As you know, any business I recommend to my clients is one that I would use myself. One of the great things about Sweet and Saucy Shop is that it is truly a family affair. Above is Melody herself with some of her supportive and loving family.

I don't have a picture, because I ate it, but my favorite treat was the Chocolate Espresso Kahlua Cupcake. Oh, and the Monster Cookies. And the Cake Lollipops...

I am usually not a big fan of teasers -really! I'm all about celebrating the joy of the moment now, so that is why I'm posting this post. Yes, it's a bit of a teaser in a way because I can't give you the full details yet. Then again, I don't even have the complete details to give. Ok, I'll stop rambling now...

I am very excited to announce that Megan Kocher Wedding and Event Design, LLC, has both a new website and a new blog in the works. Our goal is always to serve our clients best, and we strive to do that with every decision we make. The new blog is going to offer brides and grooms a different insight into all things wedding planning. We are going to attempt to do some of the planning legwork for you, and we hope that it will make your planning process as smooth as possible.

The site should be out shortly, and the goal is to have the blog fully functional by fall. Don't worry, we are still here working on each and every event. We are just very excited to be bringing you even more!

Writing your own vows doesn't mean you have to forgo traditional vows. It doesn't mean that you have to memorize something, come up with a poem, or have something deep to say. It does mean adding a personal touch to your ceremony. It's a chance for each of you to make a very personal pledge. You can write it out ahead of time and read it. There is nothing wrong with that. You can say what is on your heart in that very moment. Either way, I think it is something to really consider.

Often, there is so much attention put on the reception when the ceremony is the whole reason for the day. Without it, you wouldn't be married. So don't over think it, but consider saying a few of your own words on your wedding day.

A Quick Thought On Wedding Colors

There is nothing wrong with picking just one color as the base of your wedding design. This decision can lead to a very elegant and classic feel - just be careful! I came across a wedding last week where everything was purple and only purple - the bridesmaids' dresses and shoes, the flowers, the ribbon on the chairs, the canopy... everything. Just passing through the resort I thought of Oompa Loompas and the One-Eyed, One-Horned Flying Purple People Eater.

Throughout the wedding planning process, with each decision, take a breath and take a moment to step back and look at the big picture.

Summer Vacation Wedding Inspiration Part VI: Lighting and Natural Surroundings

Sadly, vacation has to come to an end at some point. However, the memories will live on for a lifetime. The same is true for your wedding day. It's over in the blink of an eye, but you will remember it forever.

Las Vegas is a city full of light; that is part of its charm. Don't forget to use various lighting aspects to add to the ambiance on your day...

It can be as simple as maximizing the light around you (i.e. planning your ceremony to end during sunset), or as complex as dramatic, color specific up-lighting.

Our hotel used this floor to ceiling chandelier to create a shower of diamonds in the lobby.

My absolute favorite use of light - candles. They are inexpensive and you can get very creative with them. Give me any wedding, and I'll give you unique ways to use candlelight for your specific affair.

Lastly, remember that your surroundings can be priceless. Keep this in mind when picking your venue or mapping our your design.

Take a moment, wherever you are in your wedding planning process, and let your mind wander. What do you like in life? In store window displays? In nature? Take what you love and incorporate that into your wedding. Anything is possible if you open up your mind to the inspiration around you!

Summer Vacation Wedding Inspiration Part V: It's All In the Details...

Second to last day of summer vacation blogging...

"It's all in the details..." This is a motto I live by. I find that it's the little details in life that often add up to make the biggest impact. In Vegas I found someone else who seems to have the same belief as I do - Donald Trump. The hubs and I were blessed to get to check out the new Trump International Hotel during our stay in Vegas. I've never been to a hotel that paid so much attention to the littlest of details...

The room was beautifully laid out, and the floor to ceiling windows added beautiful light and views.

This game board was such a cute touch. I wanted to put it in my suitcase to use for a wedding. Wouldn't it be perfect for your guest lounge area? Some of the simplest touches make a lasting impression.

Not only did they provide the most complete kitchenette I've ever seen in a non-suit, but inside the cupboards there were china plates and several kinds of glassware. Being prepared for a multitude of needs is always welcoming to your guests.

For some reason, this was one of my favorite features. The TV remote was stored in a leather box.

The typical hotel toiletries were taken to another level by placing a silver tray underneath. Small, simple, seemingly insignificant touches make a big impact.

Think of your wedding from start to finish. Where can you add in little, inexpensive, easy-to-do touches that will enhance the whole look and feel of your luxurious day?

Summer Vacation Wedding Inspiration Part IV: The Getaway Car

Having a send off at the end of your wedding reception is a trend that seems to come and go, but I think it should be here to stay. It's a great way to end such a wonderful celebration, and it can really be done with style. Gone are the days of birdseed...

This leads me to Vacation Part IV, The Getaway Car. As part of loving my husband, I agreed to tour the Imperial Palace Auto Collection. Of course, while we were there I got to thinking about wedding send offs, and all of the different styles you can choose from. If you're having a traditional garden reception, you may want to consider a horse and carriage. Getting married over the Pacific Ocean on a remote bluff? Maybe you could arrange for a helicopter out of there...

Ok, so maybe you want to stick to a car. Well, remember that limos aren't the only cars for hire out there. Especially in Southern California, brides and grooms can typically find an vehicle of their choosing for the day. Out of the museum I would have picked this one...

It's the Mini that Charlize Theron drove in the beginning of the movie Italian Job. Love it!

No matter what you choose, doing a send off is a great way to leave your mark on the end of a great event.

Yes, these are the burnout marks my husband left at our wedding. The race car driver in him couldn't resist. Kids: DO NOT try this at home.

Summer Vacation Wedding Inspiration Part III: Wedding Themes

Vegas does themes like nobody else. Pretty much every hotel has a strong theme, and they all do it up to the max. Here are a few snapshots from the Bellagio at night:

All weddings have a theme as well, even if they weren't intended. It may revolve around color, location, or a passion. While it's a good idea to put some thought into choosing your theme, what matters more is how you execute your theme. Better yet, don't think of it as a theme for your wedding but more of an overall feel. The more you tie the elements of your celebration together - from the flowers, to the food, to the music - the better. However, it is easy to get caught up in the planning and overdo your theme.

To make it plain and simple, when it comes to your theme remember that the ultimate goal is balance. You want a purpose behind ever element, and you want to envelope everyone in the day. However, you don't want to scream tacky. Always ask yourself the following two questions before making a decision:

1. Does this element have a purpose behind it? Does it echo our personalities or tie into our day?

2. Am I making this decision just because it goes along with my theme? Do I really like this or is it a bit overboard?

I know it's a cliche, but if you take a few moments to stop and take it all in before making a decision you'll be much happier with the end result on your wedding day.

Summer Vacation Wedding Inspiration Part II: Creative Cakes

Let the fun of summer continue...

While walking through Wynn Las Vegas I had to whip out my camera and take a picture of the cakes that were on display outside of Sugar and Ice, one of their eateries. I apologize for the glare from the cases, but I didn't want you guys to miss out.

These stacked hat boxes lend themselves well to a Victorian theme. Around the cake they had pearls and other jewelry on display. I absolutely love when the cake theme spills over onto the table it is sitting on.

This cake is unique with its ruffled tiers that pay homage to the layers of a wedding dress. The attention to detail is intense and helps to draw your eye in. Intricate cakes always stand out as conversational pieces.

I felt that the opulence of this cake lent itself well to the surrounding hotel decor. I don't know if that is what the baker intended, but it's always a good idea to keep your surroundings in mind when picking out the design of your wedding cake.

Lastly, this whimsical cake lent me to believe that there was more of a personal story behind its creation. Never be afraid to let your personalities shine in all areas of your wedding. This is so much more important than being traditional.

When you sit down with your baker, be ready to think outside the box to create a cake that is daring, reflects you personally, and draws in your theme and surroundings. The cake truely can be so much more than dessert.

It's summer. A time for weddings, but also a time for vacations. I promised you a special series this month. Well, come on vacation with me!

Not too long ago I was in Las Vegas, Nevada. No, I didn't go to Vegas for a wedding. Although, I think I came across about 6 brides and grooms. Anyway, while I was there, I kept getting inspiration for weddings and blog posts. No, I didn't get infused with ideas for drive-through weddings as the solution to today's economy. Stay tuned, and be inspired by the details...

All smiles after a yummy cheeseburger. Oh the food - so much, so delish! Don't forget, it's not about what you serve at a wedding. It's about how delicious it is.

Please pardon the blur. We were on a moving walkway, taking in the sites. Have you planned areas for your guests to be able to take a moment off the dance floor to take it all in?

Look closely. There is a double rainbow. See, rain isn't always a bad thing on a wedding day. P.S. As I recently told a bride, I've yet to have it rain during a wedding. Not making any promises here, but I'm just saying.

Venice anyone? Vegas does such a good job of taking their guests and transporting them to another world. No matter your wedding theme, this is what should happen for your guests. They should get lost in a world of celebration, transported into the moments that are your wedding day.

I hope that everyone had a wonderful 4th of July! I have a new series of blog posts coming up for this month, so stay tuned for that. Loads of inspiration coming your way. For now though, I'm going to live in the moments of the 4th for just a little bit longer.

For the past two years the hubbs and I have been following a new 4th tradition. We spend the day on our local, favorite beach. Just hanging quietly as the two of us, taking in summer. Once I say, 'I'm getting cold!' we head up to our car, grab warmer clothes, and then share some pizza.

After dinner it's over to Vons to pick up as much candy as a little kid's heart could desire. Of course, I have to go to Coffee Bean for an Earl Grey. Then we park it back on the beach, with front row seats to watch the sunset as the bardge moves in.

Mmmmm, dark peanut M&Ms. Yes, we ate almost the whole bag that night...

Ahhhh, summer!

Was I Always Meant To Be A Wedding Planner?

I just had to share this piece of paper with you. It's a list my mom recently found in a stack of old papers...

Apparently, although I had no clue, owning Megan Kocher Wedding and Event Design was always in the cards for me. I was never one to drool over Tiffany, and I did not dream up the details of my big day until I was engaged. But growing up I did plan a wedding for some girl named Kristen. Too funny!

Today, the checklists I make for each wedding are about 13 pages instead of 13 points. Still, there is a lot to learn from the list of a little girl:

Always double check that you have your wedding bands ready to go for the ceremony.
Pamper yourself by letting someone else worry about your hair...
...and your nails.
Buy yourself something new to wear on your honeymoon...
...and don't forget to pack well ahead of time. (P.S. Don't forget sunglasses! They are often left behind in all the wedding craze.)
It's easy to skip lunch on the big day, but don't do it. You are going to need energy.
Buy something special for each person in your wedding party. They've been such a support along the way.
Pay all of your vendors.
Sometimes we make notes in haste that we can't remember later. Oh well, it couldn't have been that important.
Find moments to relax and unwind. You deserve it.
If you are leaving for your honeymoon right after the reception, make sure your luggage is handy.
Bring your dress home when the alterations are all done and it is cleaned and pressed. Who could forget this one? Most brides are dying to bring their dress home.
When all is said and done... enjoy, celebrate, and eat cake!

You know that I'm a stickler for taking care of every last little detail. The better the planning ahead of time, the smoother your wedding day will go. Though, one thing you cannot control is the weather. Duh, we all know that. You can have a tent on standby, have heaters waiting in the wings, or coolers just waiting to be turned on. However, my biggest piece of advice when it comes to wedding day weather is to embrace whatever it ends up being that day, and incorporate it into your celebration.

If it is blazing hot the week of your wedding, have your coordinator set out a refreshing drink bar of lemonade, iced tea, and water to welcome your guests. I love this lemonade jar and stand from Sur la Table...

If it looks like it's going to rain, there is always a Target nearby for us to pick up some elegant or colorful umbrellas.

Most of all, acknowledge the fact that you can't control this element and then go on enjoying your wedding day. The best weddings of all are the ones where both the bride and the groom take time to take it all in and enjoy themselves.

P.S. Don't worry, as wedding and event consultant, we've got plenty of other tricks up our sleeves to deal with the uncontrollable elements. That's our job -- to take care of it all so that you don't have to worry about a thing.

Tip: take the boxes and packaging you have left over from all of the gifts that were shipped to you. Break them down, bundle them up, and list them on Craigslist. There are actually people out there who want to buy them, and you can make some easy cash out of your trash. It's not like winning the lottery, but it can be enough for a date night for you and your new spouse.

I love Crate and Barrel, so when I heard about CB2 I was excited to check out their wares. CB2 is Crate and Barrel's new 'affordable modern' store. Their most recent opening is in Los Angeles, and while I haven't made it there in person yet, I already found some great items on their website to decorate both wedding ceremonies and receptions. Did I mention that their prices are pretty reasonable?

This hanging candle holder would be stunning hanging in the trees of a garden wedding. These modern vases can take your flower arrangements to a whole new level.

Forget traditional glass cubes (although I love those too), and add a splash of silver.

These whimsical balls were too cute not to include. Toss them on a staging table to add pop.

The Wedding Binder, Every Bride Needs One

On the shelf with all of your most prized wedding books and magazines, you absolutely need to have an wedding binder. While the first thing you need to do in planning your wedding is make a budget, the second thing you need to do is set up a binder to keep track of everything. Trust me, your binder will be worth its weight in gold!Organization is key when it comes to having a beautiful wedding day. Your binder doesn't have to be fancy, but it needs to be organized. And hey, if want to have a little extra fun go ahead and decorate it / get a binder with a clear cover so that you can insert a scrapbook page.Inside the binder you will want color tabbed dividers with pockets. The pockets are to keep all the loose papers you will accumulate / things you may not want to 3-hole punch.Label your tabs. Must have labels include:

Venues
Attire
Catering (Food/Drinks/Cake)
Flowers & Decor
Music
Photography & Videography
Honeymoon Budgeting & Finances

This binder should contain everything actually pertaining to your day. Note: I recommend keeping separate files for vendors and ideas you are still considering so as to keep things as clear cut as possible.

Take your wedding binder with you to all your vendor meetings and the whole planning process will go a lot more smoothly.

This is the first post in an on-going series I'm calling 'Love Is...' Love is all around us in different places and in different ways. Typically, when two people get engaged they are in the middle of a very romantic period in their lives. What's important is keeping that love and romance going throughout the years. With time, things change and so do the ways we show each other love. However, love is powerful in every form. These posts will be a way for me to share random instances of love with the hope that they will inspire us all.

All Inclusive Honeymooning

In my last post I talked about the importance of giving yourself little breaks form all the crazy wedding planning. Well, even better is the big 'break' that comes after you say 'I do' -- the honeymoon!

There are lots of routes you can go with the honeymoon, and you should do what suits you and your spouse best. That being said, I'm going to take a moment to praise all-inclusive resorts for the best rest of your life. I think they are something every couple should consider. Doesn't this look amazing?
During the year we were engaged, the hubs and I were not only finishing up our college degrees and working, but he was designing a large scale project and I was publishing my thesis. Graduation came exactly 1 month before our wedding day, and then came Christmas and New Years. It was a crazy busy time.

We decided to honeymoon with Palace Resorts in Playa del Carmen. Best choice ever! Neither of us have ever been so relaxed in our lives. The room service was limitless, our fridge and bar were stalked daily, the hammock on our balcony was perfect, and laying on the beach with people tending to our every need was unbelievable! You know I'm a sucker for a deal. Did I mention that they have great rates? Once you book, you don't have to worry about a thing because everything is included. They aren't even allowed to accept tips. It's a very nice change of pace after planning so many details leading up to the wedding. Oh yeah, every single room has an ocean view and a spa tub.

Are you jumping out of your skin yet just wanting transport yourself this paradise? Well, whatever you decide to do remember to treat yourselves well. Happy wedding planning, happy honeymooning, and happy ever after...

You Deserve A Wedding Break

I had another wedding and event planning post in mind for today. However, looking out my office window...I have this big, beautifully pink rose staring back at me:Thus, here is what I have to say today instead: It's important when planning a wedding or big event to remember to give yourself a break. No matter how excited you are, it's easy to burnout. I'm going to be cheesy here and say, 'Remember to stop and smell the roses!'

Before burnout sets in, take lots of mini breaks. Grab a Starbucks or flip through a non-wedding magazine. **Gasp!** And remember to also take a big break now and again. Have a planning free weekend with your fiance or treat yourself to a pedicure. Your event will be better off because of it.

Mother of the Bride, aka MOB

Mother's Day being this past weekend has gotten me to thinking about mom's and their role in their daughters' weddings. Traditionally, the father of the bride walks the bride down the aisle, has a special dance, and often makes a toast. However, there aren't any outstanding traditions when it comes to the mother of the bride. Thus, I think this aspect can often be overlooked when planning your wedding. I regret not honoring my mother more than I did on my wedding day.

So what does the mother the bride do? Well, for me my mom was my anchor. She was the person I talked to about every last little detail and stress. The person I shared every planning joy with. She hunted every store in the area for the perfect brown ribbon, even sending me numbered samples all the way in another state. She addressed all of my invitations in her beautiful handwriting and got creative making gift bags for all of the out of town guests. That is just this tip of the iceburg. I could go on for pages and pages about all that she did for me and my wedding. However, the greatest thing of all is that she was and is my best friend, there for me in every way.

So while there aren't any traditions when it comes to moms and the actual wedding day, I encourage you to take a moment in your planning to find a way to honor your mom. Think of something personal, something that relates to your relationship. Maybe you could present her with a special keepsake and thank you during dinner. You may wish to incorporate a rose ceremony before your vows, where you and your fiance present a flower to each mother. Most importantly, ask your mom how she would like to be involved in your day.

To my mom, endless thank yous for all that you have done for me, on my wedding day, before, after, and all through my life. Thanks for being my biggest cheerleader. Thank you for teaching me how to be a strong and loving woman. Thank you for making my wedding day so special!

The Cravens Estate

One of the great things about being a wedding and event consultant in Southern California is that there are thousands upon thousands of amazing venues. Yesterday, I got to swing by one that is new to me --the Cravens Estate, also known as the Chapter House. It's nestled in a residential neighborhood in Pasadena, just a few miles from the Rose Bowl. And this rustic garden retreat offers a lavish locale for almost any event.

I believe in catching your guests' attention from the moment they arrive, and this wrought iron entrance followed by a rose lined path will do that:
The brick building is a beauty in itself. Here is a shot of the back side:The surrounding landscape creates an enchanted garden feel. With a few up-lights and some candles you may just feel like you are on a movie set. Did I mention that this local has been used for many TV shows, including current scenes on Desperate Housewives?Just as I was finishing up my visit, I spotted this butterfly. As she flew off she revealed golden yellow wings.I've got a wedding coming up there soon, and I cannot wait to share photos from the day with you. Happy Birthday To The Blog

One year ago today I made my fist blog post. I titled it Blessed, and here is what I had to say: 'I am blessed to have a job that never seems like work to me. It is an honor and a pleasure for me to help others create seamless events that show their personality, fit their budget, build memories, and exceed their expectations.'

I am thrilled to say that today I feel the same as I did then. A lot has happened in a year - new clients, new events, new challenges, new opportunities - and I'm still loving every minute of it. I take every wedding I plan very personally, and I would like to thank all of my clients for allowing me to feel so blessed. Thank you to all who read this blog, and thank you to my wonderful husband, mother, brother, family, and friends who continue to enrich my life and my work.

The Flower Fields & Wedding Inspiration, Part II: Shades of Green

We will get back to the brilliant blooms and pops of color in the next flower inspiration post. Right now, I am going to stick with the color green. Why? Because I think this is a good opportunity to talk about color scheme. Traditionally, weddings have two main colors in addition to black and white. Notice I said traditionally. I don't believe in doing anything in your wedding just because it is tradition, and I don't believe in doing anything that doesn't ring true to the bride and groom's personalities, interests, and tastes. That being said, don't ever feel that you have to stick to two colors.

Using the whole rainbow as your pallet can be tricky and must be done carefully and tastefully. However, if your tastes are simple you may want to consider using just one color. I love monochromatic weddings. The utilization of varying shades of color can be elegant and unique. Here's a green pallet I created from my pictures of The Flower Fields. Notice how well each shade goes with the other:

Another bonus with monochromatic based color schemes, you don't have to worry about constantly matching a color. The ribbon you want your florist to use doesn't have to perfectly match the swatch from your bridesmaid dresses. You don't have to shell out extra to get the napkins exactly matched to your invitations.
Instead of focusing on more colors, you can think about shapes and textures. Varying these elements can have a huge impact on the appearance of your final product - an absolutely stunning and chic wedding.

Consider using various blooms in your chosen color to create depth and height differences. This will keep the eye entertained, and it's a free consideration in terms of upping your decor.

I recently took a trip to The Flower Fields in Carlsbad. This wasn't my first time there, and I doubt it will be the last year I go. While it continues to get more and more crowded, I think the trip is totally worth it for some wedding inspiration. You'll be seeing several related blog posts coming up, but for now I thought I would share a sneak peek. Enjoy!

Using one bold color along with neutrals can make a big statement when it comes to picking your wedding or event colors. Remember, you don't have to go with a typical 2-color scheme. Instead, pick one strong color and back it with creams, white, or brown undertones.

Hydrangeas are one of my favorite flowers. Ok, who am I kidding, I have a place in my heart for just about any flower.

Big blooms can mean having to purchase fewer stems. One large floral can make as big of a statement as several smaller stems combined together. Vases of hydrangeas can easily add elegance to any centerpiece.

I love, love, love ranunculus...

These blooms are perfect for a garden themed wedding or celebration. Bridal shower luncheon anyone? The variety of color and their many layers equal a beautiful arrangement without being over stated.

Matthew and Jaime, To-Be-Weds

Many assume having a wedding consultant is a luxury. We don't see it that way. No bride, nor her family, should be running around stressed. The day goes quickly; you should be afforded the right to take in every moment. Semi DIY Pom Poms

The other day while running errands, I had to stop and whip out my camera. Here's what caught my eye:

The lovely folks at Martha Stewart have come up with a kit for tissue paper pom poms.

Tissue paper pom poms started popping up all over the place at weddings a few years ago. Now, you must remember to be tasteful when using tissue as decor. However, if you are looking to add a little whimsy to part of your ceremony or reception, these creations may just do the trick. Martha even has a how-to guide for using them as a garland on your get away car. If you have the time and would like to make them from scratch, you could also follow their instructions on the Martha Stewart Weddings website.

Marriage and Taxes

As we all know all too well, April 15 is tax day. Not a day any of us look forward to - unless it's your birthday? However, now is a great time to take into consideration how your married status will affect your tax status. Don't fret! I know that many don't find it fun to talk about money. However, with some careful planning from the get go, you can avoid a lot problems.

No matter when you get married in the year, your marital status on December 31 is your marital status for all of 2009. Thus, if you get married in 2009, you will be 'married' on your next tax return. Regardless of this 'married' status, it is up to you and your spouse to decide if you want to file jointly. While in most circumstances it will be of greater benefit for you to file jointly instead of separately, check now with your financial advisor. Don't wait until it comes time to file your taxes next year, because you may want to adjust your withholding. Who knows, you may even end up with more cash in your hands.

Either way, the best way to keep things from becoming a problem is to talk about them early and openly. This goes for all aspects of your marriage, and not just your taxes and money.

Wedding Swans

Most brides have at least one, over-the-top, dream wedding wish. It may be a designer dress, a particular location, or a giant display of fireworks. For me, it was swans. As I've mentioned before, I was not the bride who had planned her wedding since the age of 5. However, there was one thing always in the back of my mind - swans. Real ones, wandering the grounds wherever I got married. In the end, swans were not conducive to my venue. I don't think they would have enjoyed the chlorine in the resort's pool. However, I saw some swans the other day and my dear husband captured them for me with the camera. It was too perfect. They were white and black - bride and groom. ;-)

Welcome Spring

Today marks the first day of spring. I love looking out my window and seeing the Palos Verdes Peninsula turn a warm and welcoming green. I was thrilled last week to see lupins, and many other wild flowers, start blooming along the roadside.

The start of spring means that wedding season is fast approaching. It also stands as a reminder for us to all take a moment out of our hectic schedules to stop and enjoy all of the natural beauty around us. I wish you all a very happy Friday, and a wonderful spring season!

Budget Travel For Your Honeymoon

I did a little digging on Google and found that honeymoons date back to Biblical times. Check this out from Wikipedia: "Possibly the earliest reference to a honeymoon is in Deuteronomy 24:5 'When a man is newly wed, he need not go out on a military expedition, nor shall any public duty be imposed on him. He shall be exempt for one year for the sake of his family, to bring joy to the wife he has married.'"

Your honeymoon is not just a chance to take an awesome vacation as Mr. and Mrs., but it also gives you both some much needed time to unwind together after months of planning. Now, back to the reason I started this post in the first place...

Many couples receive help paying for their wedding but not their honeymoon. Remember, while it is nice, no one is truly obligated to pay for anything. With the economy the way it is, everyone is looking for a deal. The good news is, there are great deals on travel.

I've been doing a bit of research the past few days, and while there are lots of helpful travel sites out there, I would like to point you all in the direction of Budget Travel. How does a vacation package in Hawaii, including airfare, for under $700 sound? Or $67 per night in the Caribbean? Europe anyone? I'm finding their site to be the end-all-be-all of discounts. They are really staying on top of all of the current deals, and you may just find one perfect for your post-wedding getaway.

Earlier I posted 1 Corinthians 13:4-7. Today, I'd like to share with you what another couple suggested to my husband and I before our wedding day. While we were planning to have these verses read at our wedding, they suggested that before the big day we read them to each other and replace 'love' with 'I'. It was a special moment for us in the middle of all of the planning, and it made the reading at our wedding hold even more value. Here is what it looks like:

I will be patient. I will be kind. I will not envy, I will not boast, I will not be proud. I will not be rude, nor self-seeking, I will not be easily angered, I will keep no record of wrongs. I will not delight in evil but will rejoice with the truth. I will always protect, always trust, always hope, and always persevere.

For everyone in the middle of wedding planning, remember that the most important part is the marriage that comes after the big day. Later on in the week, I will share a personal story relating to these verses. For today, here is 1 Corinthians 13:4-7:

What To Ask Yourself When Hiring a Wedding Consultant

Today we wrap up our series about including a wedding consultant in your plans. I hope you have all enjoyed it!

Here is what you should ask yourself when hiring a wedding consultant:

Do your personalities mesh? No matter how talented she is, she needs to be someone who can share your vision.
What is your first impression? There are a lot of people in this industry. If something turns you off, don't wait. Look into hiring someone else.

Does she listen to what you have to say, or does she think this is her wedding? A good consultant should blend into the background and make sure you are the star of your day.

Is she looking out for your best interests, or is she referring you to vendors who pay her a cut? While there may be nothing wrong with those vendors, I believe that the best wedding consultant is one who does everything possible to put your needs first. This includes not taking kickbacks.
Can she take authority? You don't want someone who is a drama queen. However, you do want someone who can gracefully assert herself when necessary--whether she has to be firm with another vendor or tell an out-of-line guest to cool it.

If she has not worked with your venue in the past, is she going the extra mile to familiarize herself with the area? Southern California has endless locations for events, so it's normal for a consultant to have not worked with a venue before. However, she should be going out and meeting with the on-site coordinator and scoping everything out before your big day.

Is she established in the community? Does she hold the proper papers with her city and the state? Is she fully invested or just doing this as a hobby?

Does she respond to your inquires in a timely manner? This person is supposed to make your life easier. If it takes more than 24 hours for her to get back to you, you should be concerned.

What does your intuition tell you? You know if you are uncomfortable with something. If so, speak up.

Is she passionate about your wedding? Does she make you feel as if you are her only client? It's your special event, and you should feel important and taken care of.

We would be honored to be a part of your day, and we are happy to meet with you for a consultation. However, the most important thing to us is that you find good vendors who mesh with you and that you have an exquisite celebration that runs smoothly. Congratulations, you're getting married!

New Ann Taylor Wedding Collection

If you like Ann Taylor, you might want to check out their new collection of bridesmaid and cocktail dresses. The color choices are slightly limited, but they do offer some cuts that you don't see other places. Their selection is big enough that you should be able to find something for every body type. (Remember, your girls don't have to all wear the same dress.) I do think the prices are a bit on the high side, averaging around $200. Either way, check them out and judge for yourself. Oh, I almost forgot! Check out my favorite feature, their real wedding pictures showcasing some of the dresses in actual weddings.

Why Should I Hire a Wedding Planner

As I recently mentioned on our blog, we've added a few things to www.megankocher.com. One area I'd like to take a moment to focus on is why you should hire a wedding planner. Yes, it's good for my business. However, in all seriousness there are many reasons as to why this is one vendor you shouldn't leave out --even if you don't hire us.

-Save Money: A lot of people think having a coordinator is a luxury. While we cannot make any guarantees, a good coordinator's fees are typically outweighed by her expertise in the industry. It's our job to know the ins and outs and to find you good deals.

-On-Site Coordinators Are Not Wedding Coordinators: Your venue contract will typically list an on-site coordinator. It's easy to confuse this person with a wedding coordinator. However, there are important differences. An on-site coordinator is a very important person. They are a liaison for the venue, and they are there to oversee the venue's interests. When you are arranging everything leading up to your ceremony and reception, it's important to have one point of contact for the location. A wedding coordinator, on the other hand, is there to be the point of contact for the big day. You don't have to go hunting anyone down for anything. Your wedding coordinator makes sure everything is taken care of from the vendors being setup to the presents making it to the proper vehicle for transport.

-Creating a Quality Team: I cannot say it enough, great vendors make for great events. As wedding consultants we are here to offer personalized research in order to help you find the deejay, caterer, photographer, florist, and so on who will be the perfect match for your day.

-Creating a Timeline: How are you supposed to know how long it will take for 5 girls to get updo's and makeup done? How long will photos take? Who should prompt the caterer to bring out the champagne toast or when to cut the cake? It's a wedding coordinator's job to map it all out and see that it all gets taken care of.

-Keeping the Pace: In addition to the timeline, a coordinator is there to keep an even pace throughout the day. No matter how much planning is done ahead of time, there are always going to be surprises. It's our job to make sure your guests aren't sitting around during a lull and that you aren't rushing from one thing from the next. Keeping a consistent flow throughout the day will keep things happy for both you and everyone involved.

-All the Little Details: It's your day to shine. You shouldn't be worrying if the place cards have been alphabetized or if tips have been given to the proper vendors. There are countless little details that need to be taken care of, but none of them should be the concern of you, a family member, or a bridesmaid.

-Point Of Contact: Going back to the beginning of this post, having a wedding coordinator creates a single point of contact. There are going to be people with questions on the big day, and you can't stop to answer all of them. Your coordinator should be familiar enough with all of the day's details that she can handle directing the florist as to where the centerpieces go and notifying the deejay as to when you are ready to make your grand entrance as Mr. and Mrs.

-Is That My Stomach Growling?: Most importantly, we make sure you don't go hungry. Weddings tend to be a time where you catch up with a lot dear family and friends. It's next to impossible to make it to the bar or over to the hors d'oeuvres. Don't worry, we make sure you're taken care of.

-The Big Picture: Not only are we there to help you with the big day, but we are really good at taking a look at the big picture and making sure that all of the planning before the big day comes together to create one big magical moment.

-Emergencies: We hope they don't happen, but if they do were are there to calmly step in and do all we can to fix things. A good coordinator can take a stain out of a dress, put a centerpiece back together, and even gracefully break up that loud conversation going on between your aunt and cousin.

-Awesome People: Lastly, we like to think we're a pretty fun bunch of people.

2009 Trends

As always, time is flying by. Even though we are already past the first month of the year, I wanted to stop and take a moment to highlight some current trends the industry is seeing for 2009:

Dimensional and Patterned Cakes: Iced flowers and pearls are taking a back seat to extra layers of fondant and dynamic patterns.

Small Cakes Act 1: One trend popping up is having a small cake as the centerpiece for each table. The cakes may be themed or all the same. Hey, here's a way to kill two birds with one stone.

Small Cakes Act 2: I'm also seeing the trend of one small and elaborate cake for the bride & groom with sheet cake being served to the rest of the guests. (Not sure how much I like this one.)

Modern Romanticism and Wimsey: Something about the overall feel of the wedding, there is a focus on the romance of it all without going back to the big poofy sleeves of the 80's or setting the scene of your high school prom. It's more about the overall tone and going back to the roots that this day is about two people committing to love one another for better or worse.

'Southern' Weddings: Even outside of the launch of the new Southern Weddings magazine (Love it!), brides across the country are incorporating sweet, Southern charm.

Home and Backyard Weddings: Brides are going back to their roots and having backyard affairs, everything from laid back to black tie. Father of the Bride anyone?

Subtle Monograms: Monograms are still popping up, but they are taking more of a back seat. Use them as an accent for the strongest impact.

Still, no matter the trends, we hope your day turns into one that is uniquely you!

Luxury Weddings Without the Luxury Price

It was an honor to be quoted on TLC's Slice of Life last week, and we loved reading all of the advice from others across the industry. We know a lot of couples are on tight budgets, and we want to see you get the most out of your wedding day. That is why we are digging out some of our timeless tips. (You'll notice our photography advice in there as well.) Enjoy!

1. Centerpieces: Forgo flowers and use other elements like fruit, various vases, and candles. If you must have flowers, use them on every other table. However, be sure to tie the tables together with one common accent or theme.

2. Cake: No, I do not recommend baking your own cake. Instead, rent a fake cake. There are lots of companies popping up with gorgeous foam-based cakes. They look just like the real thing but will save you a lot. When the cake is taken to the back to be cut, your caterer can swap in pieces of sheet cake. And yes, the foam cake still has a portion of real cake that you and your groom can cut into.

3. Photography: Find someone who will give you a CD or the negatives of all of your images. The talent you are looking for from your photographer is her shooting, not her printing.

4. Location: Have the ceremony and reception at the same location. You'll typically get a better overall price.

5. Toasting Glasses: Instead of buying 'wedding' glasses, register for champagne glasses. If someone buys them for your shower you can use them at the wedding and then continue to break them out for special occasions.

6. Cake Knife: Is there a knife that is always used in your family to cut birthday cakes? Dress it up and use it for your wedding. If not, this is another item you can register for and use time and time again.

7. Something Blue: No need to buy anything new. Have a friend or family member who is good with a needle hand-stitch your wedding date and initials in blue on an under layer of your wedding dress.

8. Drinks: Serve a signature drink instead of a full bar. It's classy, especially when passed on trays, and you can usually work out a better deal on the liquor.

9. Less Is More: Keep it simple, and never be afraid to take away elements from your design. You can always save those ideas to use elsewhere.

10. Stay True To Your Budget and Yourself: Set your budget before buying anything. As you can see, with some careful planning you can get a fabulous look for less. And who doesn't love saving money? No matter what, always stay true to your desires and personality. That is what truly makes your event great.

Buying Clearance: Now's the time to buy up table decor for your wedding. You may have to go to several store's locations to get enough of what you're looking for, but in the end the savings will be worth it. Check out places like Ikea, Pottery Barn, Target, and Crate and Barrel.
Sea Salt: Something as simple as sea salt can add a lot of pop. FYI: salt can easily be dyed to match your color scheme.
Candles, Candles, Candles: Can't say it enough, candlelight can add elegance to any room. Just remember, don't use scented candles around food. Lastly, invest in long burning candles. You don't want the twinkle to burn out during your celebration.
Flowers: I absolutely love flowers. So much so, I grew my own flower garden as a kid. However, when you're thinking centerpieces, don't think you necessarily have to include flowers. Unless you can afford lavish arrangements, your flowers might not add the punch you're looking for. Another bonus - you don't have tor worry about wilting if you forgo flowers on each table. Lastly, you can add dimension to the room by trading off centerpieces - every other table with flowers, and another (nonliving) centerpiece for the rest. Just make sure to tie the room together with some sort of consistent element throughout all the tables (i.e. candles, color scheme...)
Ribbon and Accents: As I always say, the littlest of details can make the biggest impact.
Fresh Fruit: If you're looking to add warmth to the room, fresh fruit is always a great choice. You can leave it whole, but you can also use pieces to dress things up. For one anniversary party we took round lemon slices to fill the outer edge of a vase. Then we filled the center with daisies.
Fabric: You have to be careful when picking boldly colored linens for your table. If you're not careful, color can become obnoxious. However, fabric accents are a great way to dress up more subtle linens without going over the top.
Carnations: I love time and time again when Colin uses carnations. This centerpiece he did only cost $25 and adds a lot of pop. Not to mention, carnations are a very hardy flower.

Nail Polish

I have yet to come across a bride who hasn't done up her fingers and toes for the wedding day. It's a day to look your best and a day to be pampered. If you're getting your nails done at a salon (this should be done a day or two before the wedding), let me make a suggestion. Don't use their nail polish. Instead, pick out a shade at the store and take it with you. First, this ensures that you'll be able to test out the color ahead of time. Second, the color is a nice keepsake. Huh? Yep. If you've purchased the bottle you can wear the color again for anniversaries and special dates with your new hubby. It can turn into a really fun tradition, and it's easier than fitting back into your wedding dress. Finally, if you're not one for nostalgia, it's still a good idea to have the bottle on hand for wedding day touch-ups. Happy polishing to you all!

Setting Your Budget

You may have massive or meager amounts of money to spend on your wedding or event. That doesn't really matter. You can have an exquisite occasion. However, to do so, you've gotta set your budget first and foremost.

Once the high of being newly engaged starts to even out, to-be-weds usually dive into planning. They may check out websites or flip through magazines. A vision begins to form and they want to start booking things. Wait! First, you've got to create a budget. It doesn't matter what that budget is, it just matters that you have one.

Once the budget is created, then you can start fulfilling your visions. And trust me, if you hire the right professionals you can get the day you're looking for regardless of your cash flow. No, I'm not promising that you can wear those diamond encrusted shoes that you saw in a magazine. However, what I am saying is that you can have an event that envelops your desires.

Step one to planning a wedding: set a budget.

Step two (in my humble opinion): hire a wedding coordinator who will make sure your dollars are spent wisely...

One of the reasons I started planning weddings was because I'd been to too many weddings where the bang for the buck was lacking. Two brides, with the same amount of money, can have vastly different affairs. You just have to make sure you know the ins and outs before doing anything.

Once your budget is set, relax a little. Not all of the planning can be done overnight, but with a lot of hard work the details will all come together.

It's January 16th already?

Wow, time sure does fly (something to remember when your wedding day or celebration seems so far away). With the beginning of the new year I've been busy wrapping up all the paperwork of 2008 and getting everything in line for 2009. It's nice, as everything is coming together beautifully. I hope you're ready to jump into all of the weddings and events of 2009 with me. But first, I noticed there were a few more things to clear off the camera. Let's celebrate all the joy that has been and all of the joy that is to come!

This Thanksgiving picture was a bit of an afterthought, but I wanted to share it with you anyway. Using natural elements can add great pop to any table. This year I used apples as place cards. They fit in perfectly with the gourd and leaf tablescape.
We got a chance to sneak off to The Getty for an afternoon. The gardens there are breathtaking. I could sit there, sipping a cup of tea, all day long. This flower especially caught my eye. I have no idea what it is but thought it could be a great inspirational piece. The details are amazing, and I guess it's always the little details that catch my attention. Wouldn't these be beautiful at a wedding?At the start of December we headed out of California and up to Flagstaff, AZ. Congratulations to my sister-in-law, Stephanie, on becoming a nurse! Ryan was pretty proud of himself for catching a picture of her on the jumbo tron.With the new year came a new coat of paint for my home office. It was time for a face lift, and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Thanks Ryan, for putting a little TLC into it!Here's the finished project. What you can't see in this photo, though, is my giant design/idea board. Lots of new things coming out in 2009...Gotta keep those pointe shoes and my Google mascot (Mrs. Potato Head) close. Of course, I've got the most recent issue of Modern Bride at hand as well.Lastly, Ryan and I had a great time taking a few days off for our anniversary. We were 'local tourists' and hit up Laguna Beach for a day. It was wonderfully warm out. We also gave each other 'gifts from the heart' this year. Ryan surprised me by learning how to play our wedding song on the piano. I wrote him a little something (not musical).We continued day two of celebrating 3 years by heading north to Beverly Hills. We just had to stop in Sprinkles Cupcakes for a snack. Mmmmmm, peanut butter chocolate.Lastly, we headed over to Mastro's Steakhouse for a delicious and amazing dinner. Alright 2009, here we come in full force. Can't wait to see all of what's to come. I can promise you one thing, lots of wonderful and joyous weddings and events!

Three Years

When we met, you seemed too good to be true. As we dated you always surpassed my wildest dreams of what prince charming could be. Since we've been married you continue to take my breath away with every moment, and I keep falling more and more in love with you even when I didn't know that much love was possible!

Target $1 Deals and More

I ran into Target last week to pick up a few items--yeah right, who can resist stopping to look at all of their cute stuff? Always on the lookout for great savings and possible wedding flare, the dollar deals grabbed my attention the moment I stepped in the door. Here's my PSA for all of you:

They currently have a large assortment of novelty ribbons in a variety of colors. just $1 per set. Now, maybe they don't suit your color scheme, but maybe they do? Either way, here's just one of the rolls. And yes, I am so devoted to helping you out that I stopped and took pictures of everything. I don't want you to make an extra trip if it's not what you're looking for. Then again, who wouldn't want to stop in Target?
They also have loads of scrapbooking papers and red and white tissue paper. If you are a Valentine's Day bride, or using the color red, this could be a good deal for you. Granted, if you need a tone of tissue paper we can find it for you in bulk from other sources.
Even more, the dollar bins also had an assortment of felt bags--perfect favors if you are inviting kids to the reception. They are just the right size to fit some crayons, a coloring book, and a few other novelties. Keeping the kids occupied will always contribute to the makings of a great reception. Oh, and did I mention that the children's parents will love you too?
There were also different 'boy' and 'girl' themed sticker books that you could include in the activity bags.
Lastly, everyone is pulling out their new digs for 2009. No matter what store I'm in, I always duck into the bridal and party sections. Something new to Target that you might be interested in are these OOT (out-of-town) bags. If you don't have the time to make themed bags or simply don't desire to, they now offer these simple yet elegant totes that say 'Thanks for being part of our day.' You can use them to welcome guests to their hotels, or you may also want to use them for bridal party gifts. Either way, they are $9.99 for 12.

Finding Good Vendors

I am always here to refer you to quality vendors that meet your needs and are in your price range. That's one of my favorite parts of this job, because the quality of vendors you hire will make a big impact on the quality of your celebration. I don't take commissions or kick backs from anyone. That should always be a red flag, if someone is making money off of a referral! When you are planning a wedding or event, you yourself probably don't have a list of DJs, caterers, florists, etcetera that you know a lot about. That's one of the many reasons investing in a coordinator can be priceless.

I'm always going out to meet and interview folks who work in the industry. Just before the holidays I met with one florist who truly reminded me of a very important quality when looking for a vendor--someone who is going to put your best interests before their own. She was telling me about a wedding were the bride didn't have much money left over for centerpieces. The bride wanted to make a big statement, but she just didn't have much wiggle room in her budget. (We all know how that is!)

The florist didn't try to sell the bride on something she couldn't afford. Instead, she told her where she could find discount vases and other seasonal elements. The bride picked up all of these items, on sale, and then the florist tied them into her arrangements. This saved the bride tons of money and she still got the impact she was looking for.

When you find someone who will go out of their way to help you like that, they are a keeper; you know you've got a great vendor!

Holiday Inspiration

Now that the holidays are wrapping up it's time to think back to all the decor you've seen over the last month. The holidays are a great time to get wedding inspiration. Here's one idea I'm pulling out of the camera...

My husband and I were out during the day and saw these things hanging in the trees. Of course, I had to check it out. They were satin sacks filled with clear Christmas lights. It looked interesting enough in the daylight; I made the hubbs go back that night so I could see the full effect. My camera doesn't do justice to this person's creativity.

For an outdoor reception, which we have many of here in CA, what a neat alternative to wrapping the trees with white lights. Although, I am a sucker for tasteful twinkle lights. Enjoy!

Pottery Barn Inspiration

I was in Pottery Barn over the weekend and found some nifty place card holders. They are little silver packages. The bow holds the place card, and you can open the box. Perfect for the bride looking to make the place card holder and the favor one and the same. You could fill them with candies in your wedding colors or whatever your heart can dream up. I haven't been able to find them at PotteryBarn.com, so if you're interested I'd run out and find them. They are on holiday clearance. Heck, if you want them, call me and I'll go out and get them for you. :-) Too cute!

Holiday Time On the Waterfront

Whether you live in the South Bay or not, I've got a fun holiday event for you--and it's free!

The Port of Los Angeles is lighting up their fountains coordinated to holiday music. While the fountains run throughout the week, the best time to go is on Friday nights from 7-9pm. Songs play regularly, instead of 20 minutes apart, not to mention that there is live choral entertainment and vendors are on hand.

Ryan and I checked it out last weekend and stayed the whole time. Just bundle up. FYI, you can even bring your own hot coco.

In this week of celebration I hope that you and yours have much to be thankful for and that you receive endless blessings as we move towards the end of 2008.

In planning events I am continually reminded just how little the actual 'things' mean and how important the moments are.

I am truly blessed and have many things to be thankful for. Just a few include my husband, who is always supporting me in everything and at all times. The laughter and joy he brings to each day. My mom who is my cheerleader, and my brother who is a true friend. My friends, two in particular ;-), who are like sisters. And thank you to all of you for allowing this to be my life's work. Happy Thanksgiving!
